Bryn Celli Ddu meaning ‘the mound in the dark grove’ was plundered in 1699 and excavated between 1928 and 1929. There are two monuments on the site, one built on top of the other. The first monument which was a Henge that contained a central stone was built during the Neolithic period then during the Bronze Age, the stones were removed and a passage grave was built over the top of the centre of the Henge.
